SPITSBERGEN - SUMMER ICE
Spitsbergen - or Svalbard - as the Norwegians call this Arctic island group - is ideal as a summer destination; the land of the never setting sun. Instead of sunbathing, you cruise through blue icebergs - a natural spectacle that the seafarers of the Dutch Golden 17th.Century didn't appreciate; on the contrary, in their wake the area was stripped of it's unique fauna in the search for whale fat, fur and ivory. Fortunately, this icy archipelago is now a protected nature reserve; the undisputed land of the polar bear. Visitors are only allowed to get near these aquatic killers under the supervision of expert - and armed - guides. The safest and most comfortable way of discovering this white paradise is by expedition ship equipped with agile Zodiac boats that allow small groups to have close encounters with walrus, seals, reindeer, polar fox and whales during the 24 hour daylight. The life threatening polar bears are treated with respect and are viewed at a safe distance; from the zodiacs it is possible to have a very impressive view. A couple of hours watching blue whales feeding means going to bed at 4.00 a.m.
Weather and ice permitting, the ship can circumnavigate the rugged coastline of Svalbard, visiting a picturesque harbour, an abandoned mining village or long forgotten whale fat factory, on the way. A constantly changing panorama of sheer glaciers, cliffs, blubber and blood - but always a unique and lonely beauty. An overwhelming experience.
Want to visit Spitsbergen? The Dutch ship Plancius was completely renovated in 2009 and has room for a maximum of 110 passengers. A very comfortable - but not luxurious - expedition ship with an international crew and guides; kayaking, hiking, zodiac expeditions and even camping are included in the price.
